What inspired you to get into politics and eventually run for office?
Madinah Wilson-Anton shared that from a young age, she was interested in politics and initially aimed to be an interpreter at the United Nations. However, realizing the competitive nature of that field, she shifted to studying international relations. Her journey into politics began with an internship at the Delaware State House, where she discovered a passion for public service at the state level. Encouraged by friends and colleagues, she decided to run for office and was elected in 2020, ultimately serving in her third term representing her hometown in the Delaware State House.
What was it like competing against your former boss in the election?
Competing against her former boss, who was a 22-year incumbent, was an awkward experience for Madinah. Initially, she approached him seeking his blessing as he had mentioned retirement. However, when he decided to run again, she found herself running against him in a three-way primary. Despite the discomfort and tension, Madinah's grassroots team managed to secure victory by a narrow margin of 43 votes.
What inspired you to transition from politics to comedy?
Madinah's decision to pursue comedy alongside her political career stemmed from a desire to maintain balance and prevent politics from consuming her identity entirely. During a panel discussion on women in politics, she noticed her ability to incorporate spontaneous jokes that resonated with the audience. This realization led her to explore comedy as a creative outlet and a means to stay grounded outside the realm of politics.
How did you navigate being a clean comedian in a "filthiest comic" competition?
Invited to participate in a "filthiest comic" competition despite being a clean comedian, Madinah opted to stay true to her comedic style and integrity. While others resorted to explicit content to cater to the theme, she chose to perform her usual material with a touch of humor aimed at another contestant. Surprisingly, Madinah advanced through the rounds and ultimately finished as the runner-up, underscoring the importance of remaining authentic and sticking to personal values in challenging situations.
